For compulsive doodler, Wren, finding out that magical beings exist is a bit of a shock. Finding out that her childhood friend and unrequited crush, Laura, is one of those magical beings? Less of a shock. Laura has always seemed supernaturally gifted at everything from school projects, to karate, to writing epic storylines for Wren’s long-running superhero comic; her having literal magic barely seems like a stretch.
Before inter-dimensional fairies called Volta brought their rivalry to the sleepy town of Hartwood, Wren’s biggest fear was that Laura would abandon her for cooler friends when they started high school. Now, as light and dark forces converge on Laura’s burgeoning magical signature, Wren will do anything to protect her friend—magic or none.
Alongside a headstrong sonic-powered Volta named Jackie, Wren must stand up to a team of magical hunters, help Laura realize her latent powers, and maybe find her own strength along the way.
For those of you who’ve already read an ARC or will burn through a short book like Girl Squad Volta in a day, I’ve started posting early chapters of Book 2 (Girl Squad Volition) over on my Patreon.New chapters will be released to my $4 tier patrons a minimum of once a week with ALL chapters hitting Patreon before the official release of Book 2 on June 6th of 2023.
I’m making this list to celebrate the release of my own YA magical girl fantasy, Girl Squad Volta, coming out in March. This particular list is indie-friendly, bi-friendly, and nonbinary-friendly, so there should be something here for a variety of readers. Also, if you read to the end, there’s a GIVEAWAY!

EARLY REVIEWS
“Be still my big queer heart! In a delightful debut that’s as much fun as the new She-Ra, and as kick ass as the original Karate kid, Maya Lin delivers the best combination of sparkly girl power and gritty action sequences I’ve ever had the pleasure to read!” – Virginia McClain, author of Blade’s Edge and Victoria Marmot
“Cute likeable characters, action from the start, struggle to rekindle a waning friendship, all the nerdy references and the fast pace that kept me gripped from start to finish… I haven’t got such a joyous experience reading a book for a long time.” – Sagronaut, ARC Reader
“This was adorable. A perfect mix of fantasy, teen-angst and great fighting sequences. Very she-ra in the best way.” – ARC Reader

So yeah, even if you don’t pick up Girl Squad Volta, I hope you found something cool to check out on the list above. I had a few genres to choose from for this launch promo list. I considered putting together a list of YA portal fantasy, YA paranormal fantasy, female-centric progression fantasy… Ultimately, Sapphic YA SFF seemed like the best fit if only because it’s the niche with which I have the most familiarity. That said, I haven’t read 100% of the books above, so this should be treated as an informative list rather than full-throated endorsement of any of the titles.
I actually couldn’t include a lot of the sapphic SFF I have read and enjoyed recently (if you were asking yourself “hey, what about The Jasmine Throne / The Unspoken Name / The Midnight Lie / Legends and Lattes / The Locked Tomb / everything by Aliette de Bodard?”) because it’s not marketed as YA. And since Girl Squad is explicitly aimed a younger audience, I wanted to limit this list to other titles in that market. One day, when I finish and formally launch Gunpowder Magnolia, I’ll get to make my equivalent adult SFF list. One day…
30 Sapphic YA Sci-fi and Fantasy Books I'm making this list to celebrate the release of my own YA magical girl fantasy, Girl Squad Volta,…
We’re coming up on the release of my for-fun YA project, Girl Squad Volta, and I wanted to post quickly to share this pre-order promo.
The Girl Squad series is very different from my other works and was, in fact, something I started working on to offset the psychological stress of writing the heavier themes in my adult fantasy stories. Obviously, YA magical girl adventure won’t be for everyone in my current readership, but if you like super-powered martial arts, sparkly power-ups, and earnest teen friendship drama (or if you have a kid over the age of nine-ish who likes any of that stuff), you’ll want to check this one out!
Girl Squad Volta will launch on March 1st and all pre-order (or early order) receipts should be submitted by March 7th. The exclusive pre-order bonus bookmark will feature the Girl Squad Volta cover art created by the talented Miss Vie Book Designs and a signature from Yours Truly.
To recap, this special edition will feature smyth-sewn binding, a cloth-wrapped foil-stamped hardcover, a silver-foiled and embossed dust jacket, a full-color end sheet illustration by Félix Ortiz, a custom full-color map by Charis Loke, interior design by STK Kreations, and silver sprayed edges!
With over $200,000 in funding, we are now in the Top 10 most-funded fiction projects on Kickstarter (that’s right, Sanderson, I am… nine spots and a few tens of millions dollars behind you, but close enough!) and have hit the following goals for bonus features:
✓ Stretch goal 1: bonus interior map by Charis Loke ✓ Stretch goal 2: sewn-in fabric ribbon bookmark ✓ Stretch goal 3: two interior art pieces by Félix Ortiz ✓ Stretch goal 4: upgraded signed paperbacks with cover art to match the Special Edition
I’m especially excited that we hit the stretch goal to upgrade the paperbacks. As a paperback person, I’m stoked that we’ll get a special version with Félix Ortiz’s cover art featuring “The Duel”

What reviewers are saying on Goodreads
“This was a lovely collection of short stories from some of the great voices in fantasy.”
“I can’t call out a bad story in this anthology… I truly found myself pulled into each and every one, often finding myself emotional and also sad that the story had come to an end, before I wanted to leave.”
“There is so much sadness and so much beauty in this collection of short stories, each featuring a protagonist experiencing loss and, ultimately, healing. It was a difficult read, due to the subject matter, but a very rewarding one.”
“[A] beautiful example of why the SFF genre is, in my humble opinion, the best way to delicately explore deeper and heavier subjects by looking at them through a fantastical lens… I genuinely enjoyed reading each and every one of these, because they all managed to move me in their own way.”
